Over the last twenty years the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) network has evolved from simple voice capability to a system with the ability to transmit data across the network seamlessly. It has been able to do this by the implementation of expansions to the network using General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) and Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), which then led to the third generation (3G or UMTS) services with their much faster download speed.
The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation (3G) mobile cellular system for networks based on the GSM standard. UMTS uses wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) radio access technology to offer greater spectral efficiency and bandwidth to mobile network operators.
Unlike Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA 2000), UMTS requires new base stations and new frequency allocations with the result that a different set of hardware is needed to access the network.
